About Fix My Speaker
The story behind Fix My Speaker, the science of the cleaning tones, and what the tool can and cannot fix.
Reviewed · Fix My Speaker team
Fix My Speaker is a small set of browser tools for one common problem: a phone speaker that sounds dull, quiet or buzzy after it gets wet or clogged with lint. You get a water eject tone, a dust removal sweep, a tone generator you can tune yourself, and a stereo and frequency test to check the result.
The problem we set out to solve
Most people discover the issue the same way: the phone comes out of a pocket after a downpour or a swim, everything works, yet calls on speaker sound like they are coming from underwater. Smart watches solved this years ago — Apple Watch plays a burst of tones to clear its own speaker — but phones ship with nothing equivalent.
The usual workarounds are an app stuffed with adverts or the old bag-of-rice trick, which Apple's support pages warn against. A web page can do the job better, because any modern browser is able to produce a precise tone without installing anything.
What each tool does
- Water eject holds a 165 Hz sine wave. At that low pitch the speaker cone makes its largest movements, pumping air through the grille hard enough to break up trapped droplets.
- Dust removal glides between 120 and 600 Hz, so the mesh vibrates at a range of speeds and loosens particles of different sizes.
- Custom tone lets you pick any pitch and wave shape — handy when a speaker responds better to a slightly different note, or when you simply need a test tone.
- Speaker test plays chimes on each stereo channel and a full-range sweep, which makes leftover rattles easy to hear.
Our design rules
Made on the spot
Your browser synthesises each tone the moment you press Start. No sound file is fetched and no server is involved.
Microphone stays off
The tools only ever output sound. They never request recording permission, so there is nothing to capture or send.
Settings stay with you
Your chosen duration, volume and frequency are saved in your own browser. There are no logins, trackers or cookies.
Free every time
Run the tone once or twenty times. There is no trial, no premium mode and no waiting screen before the sound starts.
Where a tone stops helping
- Only the grille gets cleared. Sound moves water that sits in front of the speaker. Moisture that reached the circuit board has to evaporate on its own.
- Broken parts stay broken. A punctured or corroded speaker cone needs a replacement; the frequency sweep will usually make that obvious.
- Tiny speakers have limits. Phone drivers struggle below roughly 100 Hz, so every cleaning tone here sits above that point.
- Browsers decide when sound plays. Audio only starts after a tap, and a locked screen can pause it on some phones. We keep the screen awake where that is allowed.
